City, capital of Puy-de-Dome departement, in
the Auvergne region of France; population
(1993) 256,000. It is a centre for
agriculture, and its rubber industry is the
largest in France. Car tyres are manufactured
here; other products include chemicals,
preserves, foodstuffs, and clothing. The
Gothic cathedral is 13th century. Urban II
ordered the First Crusade at a council here
1095. The 17th-century writer Blaise Pascal
was born here.
